Ministylin meets Small Baby Mag

We caught up with the super talented Rebecca Lambert (or Becca) owner of the amazing Small Baby Mag. Read on for an insight into her popular digital magazine and the lovely lady herself.

Small Baby Magazine Logo

Who are the people behind Small Baby and where are you based?

I'm Rebecca Lambert (although most people call me Becca) and I live with my family in Leicestershire. I'm the one-woman band behind Small Baby, although my logo, plus any of the cool graphics you see on the site and social media are designed by my sister Megan (@meganillustrations), who is a professional illustrator. We're a match made in heaven!

Small Baby Magazine owner Rebecca Lambert (Becca)

At some point I hope to expand and get a few more cool writers and bloggers involved with the magazine, but for now it's just me typing up interviews on my laptop in the evenings (I work part-time in the week as the head of editorial at a publishing house). It's definitely a labour of love.

Tell us about you, your hobbies and family?

We're a little family of three – me, my partner Ryan and our baby boy Ralphie, who is 18 months old – and we have another one on the way, which we're so excited about! I always knew I wanted to be a mum. It's definitely what I was put on this planet to do.

And I suppose I would have to say my hobby is writing. It's all I do when I get a spare minute!

Small Baby Mag Ryan and Ralphie

When did Small Baby launch and how was it created?

Small Baby launched almost five months ago after I had this idea in my head that just wouldn't go away. I began blogging while I was on maternity leave to keep the old brain ticking over and that led to a bit of an obsession with Instagram and me entering my little boy into a few brand rep searches. A whole new world of independent businesses– most set up by mums like me – opened up before my very eyes and I was inspired. Being off on maternity leave, I didn't have loads of money to spend but I still wanted to do what I could to support them. So I began writing about them, and I realised that I wanted to create a platform for them.

Small Baby celebrates everything that is great about small businesses. It's my mission to show off some of the most creative small companies in children's clothing, nursery decor, homeware, toys and gifts.

Before I became a mum myself I had no idea that all these independent brands and businesses existed. But now I do and I want to spread the word. Who knows where we'll end up!

Small Baby Mag Ralphie

When you're not busy with Small Baby what do you like to do?

Honestly, I know it sounds boring but you can't beat a good night's sleep! I have a minor obsession with Instagram, which I'm trying to get under control. And since I've stopped breast feeding I've enjoyed a few sneaky meals out with family and friends. But my absolute favourite thing is going out on adventures with Ryan and Ralphie. Now Ralphie is walking around, the world is our oyster. The other day we went to the National Space Centre and seeing his little face light up as he explored the place gave me the best feeling. I'm a big kid myself, so I love any excuse to revisit my childhood. Take me to a soft play area and as long as it's not super busy then I'm a happy lady! You'll find me up in the tunnels!

What's been your biggest accomplishment?

Small Baby has not been running for that long, but it has already been more successful than I hoped. I'm really proud of my exclusive interview series with Not on the High Street. Going to my first tradeshow – Dot to Dot London – was a highlight too. I got such a buzz chatting to people and handing out my shiny new business cards.

If you could go to dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

This is an easy one. It would have to be my Grandma Margaret (Grandma for short!). Sadly she is no longer with us and I would love the opportunity to fill her in on what I've been up to over the last few years. She would have been delighted to be a great grandma. I'm quite sure Ralphie gets his wonderful nature from her.

What’s on your playlist?

Anything by Ludovico Einaudi – the man is a genius and I could listen to his music all day. If anyone ever feels compelled to buy me the gift of a lifetime, get me tickets to one of his concerts and I will love you forever!

What’s your quote of the day?

Can I have two?!

The first would have to be "Be kind." I really don't think you can beat kindness. Some people may see it as a sign of weakness, but whoever upset anybody by being a good, decent human being? If I'm having a bad day I try to remind myself to be kind. Although my poor partner, Ryan, gets the brunt of my anger! Through the network I've built up through blogging and Small Baby, I've been lucky to meet some of the kindest people going.

And the other is "Do what you love." Since having my son this has become so important and it's the reason I set up Small Baby. If I'm going to spend time away from him working, I want it to be worth it. Life is too short, after all.

Small Baby Mag Ralphie

Thank you to Becca for allowing us gain an insight into how she started Small Baby Mag and more about her family!

A few weeks back Ministylin was featured in the coveted Huffington post . The article is all about the demand for gender neutral clothing and how the market is currently stifled by the over abundance of traditional pinks and blues.

I've always wanted to break that 'norm' (if you can call it a norm) and offer a variety of edgy and monochrome goodness to parent folk who want that something just a little bit different.

You can check out the article below, hope you enjoy!

Meet Jazmin the mama behind fab baby Brand The Milk Collective in our Q&A catch up! We love this brand due it's simple yet fun designs. Their super soft Milk Bottle Rattles have been a hit with our fans so it's no wonder that this uber cool brand is also being stocked in Liberty London!

Who are the people behind The Milk Collective and where are you based?

The Milk Collective is a baby brand myself (Jaz) my husband Ben who does all of our behind the scenes web development and graphic design work.

Ministylin interviews Jazmin the mama behind super cool baby brand The Milk Collective

Tell us about you, your hobbies and family?

Well, my name is Jazmin but I go by Jaz and I'm originally from Boston, USA. I emigrated to the UK about 8 years ago after marrying my wonderful husband in Italy where we lived for a short time. We now have two gorgeous kids, Jude Louie, 3.5 years and Lola Coco, 2 years. Our hobbies are usually revolved around music, creating, food and wine. Now that the kids are getting a bit older we have a bit more freedom to explore and we really can't wait to travel around with them showing them all of the spectacular things this beautiful world has to offer.

The milk collective super cool brand run by mama Jazmin and her husband Ben

When did it launch and how was it created?

The Milk Collective was launched back in 2014 just before the birth of my daughter. I'd like to think that it was sort of a happy accident, I fell into it and have been enjoying the ride ever since.  I have always been a creative and owning my own shop was huge goal mine so I started creating plush toy creatures. They have since been discounted but they really paved the way for me enter this amazing new world.

What do you like to do when you're not busy making amazing products and running The Milk Collective?

I’m always working on a project. If it’s not for the shop then it will be for the house. I'm a bit of a DIY aficionado to be honest. My dream is to build our own house one day.

What's been your biggest accomplishment?

Having our products stocked in Liberty London is definitely the biggest achievement to date. I never thought anything like this would be possible, I still have to pinch myself when I think about it because I just can't believe what we've accomplished!

If you could go to dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

I am going to be cringe worthy here but I have to say my husband Ben. He's my best friend and everything seems possible when we are together. Not to mention he makes me laugh to the point of tears and really laughter is the best medicine, isn't it?!

Ministylin meets Jazmin owner of baby brand The Milk Collective also stocked in Liberty London

What’s on your playlist?

Not the typical stuff that’s for sure. I have an eclectic taste in music. My real heart lies with electronic music though. One of my favourite songs at the moment is Metal Swing by The Range.

What’s your quote of the day?

It's a quote by Erin Hanson and its meaning something my mum has try to instill in me since before I can remember.

“There is freedom waiting for you, On the breezes of the sky, And you ask "What if I fall?" Oh but my darling, What if you fly?”

Thank you Jazmin for giving us and our readers an insight into your uber cool business and your family life! We don't think it's cringe that you'd want to take your hubby out for dinner, it's super cute x

Meet the talented people behind The Jam Tart

We caught up with the amazingly talented individuals behind The Jam Tart  which is one of the latest new brands to hit down on Ministylin.

We love the creativity founders Emma and Tom have incorporated in their products! Plus we also have serious house envy guys, you just have to check out their self-build pictures :)

Who are the people behind The Jam Tart and where are you based?

Founded by Emma Jameson and Tom Moore (JAM), we are the creatives behind this colourful graphic-led children’s brand. Having established a successful design studio and worked together since year dot, we have a synergy that ‘just works’. We are based in the North East of England, close to the beach.

Tell us about you, your hobbies and family?

I love my family and I love my work. A creative thinker and doer, I design to engage and excite others.

I am fiance to the very patient, very wonderful Jonathan. Mammy to our delightful, always smiling two year old Orla and daily walking companion to our flighty springer spaniel Raisin. Our home is in County Durham where we enjoy sharing storybooks and taking long walks in the great outdoors.

The jam tart emma tom and family

When did it launch and how was it created?

I’m a typ-o-holic and since becoming a Mammy I thought it was time I combined my love for type with the world of children’s design. Animals seemed the obvious choice, who doesn’t love an ‘A is for Alligator’. We launched late Autumn, no big party, we just sort of tip-toed in.

What do you like to do when you're not busy making amazing products and running The Jam Tart?

I spend lots of my spare time with family and close friends. Gym time is my time. I enjoy tea by day and prosecco by night.

What's been your biggest accomplishment?

Completing our self build, though challenging at times and towards the end I was heavily pregnant, it was just ‘one big adventure’. I loved the challenge of designing a space that is as aesthetically pleasing as it is practical. I wanted a family home of understated beauty that we could fill with beautiful things and lots and lots of happy memories.

the jam tart self build house

If you could go to dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?

Orla Kiely, The Pattern Queen, My inspiration. I just love pattern, especially those of the geometric variety. I’m a huge Orla Kiely fan and love design from the 50’s and 60’s. Geometric shapes are the toolkit of our animal typeface.

What’s on your playlist?

Birdie.

What’s your quote of the day?

'Chips make you better.’ So true.

We caught up with Molly from Mamas Collective to get the low down on her awesome business, life and being a super #girlboss. Find out more about how she started Mamas Collective and her top tips for other Mumtrepreneurs!

Hi Molly – how are you today?

Tired (standard) but otherwise good, thanks.

Let’s start with an Ice breaker question! If you could be any drink what would it be and why?

I’d like to be a mojito – zingy and refreshing but with a bit of a kick… But, realistically, I’m probably more like a cup of tea – pretty traditional, comforting and strong when I need to be!

Now we’ve established what drink to get you on your next meet, tell us about yourself?

I am 33 (I had to really think about that; where’s the last year gone?!), have a 14-month-old called Elliot (tall, loud, mega cute), and a very patient husband called Mike. I’m Manchester born and bred and super proud of it – I grew up in Chorlton, and now live in Prestwich.

I work part-time as a Copywriter for a digital agency. As you might expect, this means I love writing, and so I also like to do a bit of blogging when I get chance. And I run a mums group called Mamas Collective that’s designed to provide mums with entertainment, inspiration and a sense of sisterhood.

I for one love the concept of Mamas Collective, as many mamas out there do as well, how did you come up with it and where did it all start?

Having read the book during my mat leave, I went along to a Mothers Meeting offshoot event in Manchester about eight weeks after Elliot was born and absolutely loved it. I was obviously really new to motherhood at the time and was feeling massively terrified, so it was amazing to sit in a room full of inspiring women who weren’t afraid to talk honestly and admit that motherhood is a challenge sometimes.

Straight after, I got in touch with the organiser to see if they’d be coming back up North soon and, if so, if they wanted any help at all. When I didn’t hear anything back, I decided to get in touch with some of the ladies I’d met there and arrange for us to do our own meetup.

And things just grew from there, really. Word slowly spread and, the more mums I spoke to, the more it became clear that a group like Mamas Collective was very much needed.

I try and put an event on every six weeks or so, and mix up the content so there’s something for everyone. It’s hard work sometimes, but so much fun. And I’ve met so many brilliant women.

I get asked this constantly but mama to mama, I’d love to hear how you achieve a work life balance?

I only returned to work a couple of months ago, so I’m still trying to figure it out! I love my job and where I work, which definitely helps; I’m in the office three days a week at the moment which seems to be working well for everyone. When I’m there, I’m very focussed on getting my job done – but when 5pm rolls around, I’m straight back into ‘mum mode’.

In terms of fitting the Mamas Collective stuff in, I just plan ahead as much as I can, and try and limit as much of it as possible to during naptimes or the evenings after Elliot’s gone to sleep.

Balancing looking after a toddler with it all means I’m always busy which can be draining, but my family are really supportive and helpful so I do still manage to grab a bit of ‘me’ time every now and again.

You have had AMAZING speakers at your events but what’s been your biggest achievement so far?

Getting Mother Pukka to come along was awesome as she’s so well-known. Almost everyone that I’ve approached about speaking has been dead up for coming along, which has been great.

But (and I’m aware this is a bit cheesy – soz) my favourite thing about running Mamas Collective is hearing about mums who’ve connected and gone on to form friendships or swap skills to help each other out, or ladies who’ve found the courage to start their own business after coming along to an event. Because that’s the whole reason I started the group in the first place.

What advice would you give to fellow entrepreneurs?

Stop thinking and start doing. Planning’s good, but wait around too long and you might talk yourself out of something that could be wonderful. Once you actually get the ball rolling, the momentum will start carrying you along, and, before you know it, you’re just in it and doing it (and, yes, failing sometimes too – but also getting better all the time). I had pretty much zero experience of organising events, selling tickets and running social media channels before Mamas Collective, and so it’s been a huge – but very rewarding – learning curve for me.

And dedicate as much time and thought as you can to building and sustaining your social media channel. It’s the easiest way to get your business out there.

What influencers / bloggers are you a regular follower (cough stalker) of?

Instagram’s the biggie for me, and my faves are @mother_of_daughters (how does she manage to look so good with four kids to take care of?!), @dresslikeamum (excellent fashion), @selfishmother (fantastic mum blogging community) and @mre.soeur (super cool mama merch). Also @drakeoncake (for LOLs).

What’s your quote of the day?

This is my quote for LIFE, not just the day: “You can do anything but not everything.”

Thank you for taking the time to share your words of wisdom and allowing gain an insight into what you do!

Ministylin Q&A with Organic Zoo MD Paulina

Ministylin is very much a family affair, so when my 9 year old son Maddex said he'd like to do a Q&A with our brands, I thought what a great way to build his confidence in creative writing but also to introduce him to the world of mini-fashion!

This is my little goof ball, giggler, my rock and my motivation.......yes he loves a good Snapchat filter, don't we all!!!!

Ministylin Maddex

So off he went and created some questions and here we are, through the eyes of a fun and intelligent nine year old, this is his very first Q&A with the lovely MD of Organic Zoo Paulina.

Q. Tell me a fun fact about you?

I cannot fall asleep without my favorite soft toy -rabbit called Rudolf. I also take Rudolf with me whenever I travel!

Q. Who's your favourite superhero?

It has to be a Catwoman. It would be great to hang around with Batman!

Q. What did you want to be when you were my age? (I'm 9 by the way :))

When I was growing up I always wanted to become a professional figure ice skater! Still love it!

Q. If you could have a dog what would you have? (I want a teacup Maltese they're so cute!)

I am a big lover of dachshunds! They are super cute with short legs and long bodies.

Q. What do you love about your job?

I love the fact that it is a happy industry! Working with babies and kids is the greatest source of inspiration and joy.

Q. Who's your favorite music artist?

It it hard to decide on one name, but it will have to be Amy Winehouse. Love her music!

Q. If you could have any super power on the world, what would it be and why?

I would choose a power that makes people kinder to each other …and if I could choose a second one I would bring a bit more sunshine and warm weather to the UK:)

Thank you Paulina for taking part! Maddex loves your answers and is already off creating more questions for next time :)

You'll find everything from babygrows, onesies to trendy t-shirts, cool harem pants to stylish sweatshirts, all from brands such as Minibasic, Shapes of Things, Organic Zoo and Sproet & Sprout. These are brands I completely fell in love with and wished they did adult sizes :) I've always been passionate about great design and unique style for children. It doesn't all have to pink and blue, it can be whatever you want it to be....white, grey, khaki and yes even black! My aim for Ministylin was to create a one-stop shop for people searching for something a bit different for their mini ones and to be inspired.

So a bit about me (don't worry I'll keep it brief, don't want to bore you!). Mama to one intelligent and charming young boy Maddex, 9 years old going on 19! He's been the inspiration behind Ministylin and if it wasn't for him, I would never have taken the leap to run my own business and follow my dreams! I wanted to show him that anything's possible if you put your mind to it #mumtrepreneur

I hope you enjoy Ministylin and the brands we have to offer, please stop by our instagram page @ministylin for regular updates, exclusive news and general going's on in the Ministylin world!
