We caught up with the super talented Rebecca Lambert (or Becca) owner of the amazing Small Baby Mag. Read on for an insight into her popular digital magazine and the lovely lady herself.
Who are the people behind Small Baby and where are you based?
I'm Rebecca Lambert (although most people call me Becca) and I live with my family in Leicestershire. I'm the one-woman band behind Small Baby, although my logo, plus any of the cool graphics you see on the site and social media are designed by my sister Megan (@meganillustrations), who is a professional illustrator. We're a match made in heaven!
At some point I hope to expand and get a few more cool writers and bloggers involved with the magazine, but for now it's just me typing up interviews on my laptop in the evenings (I work part-time in the week as the head of editorial at a publishing house). It's definitely a labour of love.
Tell us about you, your hobbies and family?
We're a little family of three – me, my partner Ryan and our baby boy Ralphie, who is 18 months old – and we have another one on the way, which we're so excited about! I always knew I wanted to be a mum. It's definitely what I was put on this planet to do.
And I suppose I would have to say my hobby is writing. It's all I do when I get a spare minute!
When did Small Baby launch and how was it created?
Small Baby launched almost five months ago after I had this idea in my head that just wouldn't go away. I began blogging while I was on maternity leave to keep the old brain ticking over and that led to a bit of an obsession with Instagram and me entering my little boy into a few brand rep searches. A whole new world of independent businesses– most set up by mums like me – opened up before my very eyes and I was inspired. Being off on maternity leave, I didn't have loads of money to spend but I still wanted to do what I could to support them. So I began writing about them, and I realised that I wanted to create a platform for them.
Small Baby celebrates everything that is great about small businesses. It's my mission to show off some of the most creative small companies in children's clothing, nursery decor, homeware, toys and gifts.
Before I became a mum myself I had no idea that all these independent brands and businesses existed. But now I do and I want to spread the word. Who knows where we'll end up!
When you're not busy with Small Baby what do you like to do?
Honestly, I know it sounds boring but you can't beat a good night's sleep! I have a minor obsession with Instagram, which I'm trying to get under control. And since I've stopped breast feeding I've enjoyed a few sneaky meals out with family and friends. But my absolute favourite thing is going out on adventures with Ryan and Ralphie. Now Ralphie is walking around, the world is our oyster. The other day we went to the National Space Centre and seeing his little face light up as he explored the place gave me the best feeling. I'm a big kid myself, so I love any excuse to revisit my childhood. Take me to a soft play area and as long as it's not super busy then I'm a happy lady! You'll find me up in the tunnels!
What's been your biggest accomplishment?
Small Baby has not been running for that long, but it has already been more successful than I hoped. I'm really proud of my exclusive interview series with Not on the High Street. Going to my first tradeshow – Dot to Dot London – was a highlight too. I got such a buzz chatting to people and handing out my shiny new business cards.
If you could go to dinner with anyone dead or alive, who would it be?
This is an easy one. It would have to be my Grandma Margaret (Grandma for short!). Sadly she is no longer with us and I would love the opportunity to fill her in on what I've been up to over the last few years. She would have been delighted to be a great grandma. I'm quite sure Ralphie gets his wonderful nature from her.
What’s on your playlist?
Anything by Ludovico Einaudi – the man is a genius and I could listen to his music all day. If anyone ever feels compelled to buy me the gift of a lifetime, get me tickets to one of his concerts and I will love you forever!
What’s your quote of the day?
Can I have two?!
The first would have to be "Be kind." I really don't think you can beat kindness. Some people may see it as a sign of weakness, but whoever upset anybody by being a good, decent human being? If I'm having a bad day I try to remind myself to be kind. Although my poor partner, Ryan, gets the brunt of my anger! Through the network I've built up through blogging and Small Baby, I've been lucky to meet some of the kindest people going.
And the other is "Do what you love." Since having my son this has become so important and it's the reason I set up Small Baby. If I'm going to spend time away from him working, I want it to be worth it. Life is too short, after all.
Thank you to Becca for allowing us gain an insight into how she started Small Baby Mag and more about her family!
